Pilot's Quick Thinking Averts Tragedy

Two people are recovering in an area hospital after a small plane crashed Sunday morning in southern Washington County.

It happened shortly after 10:00 a.m. in Crystal Village, which is just off Highway 77.

Witnesses told NewsChannel Seven the Experimental Ultralight Firehawk had just taken off from the nearby Crystal Village Airpark when the engine failed.

The pilot, a flight instructor with 30 years of experience, tried to land on a small strip of land adjacent to Highway 77.

He managed to turn the plane around before it crashed to the ground, clipping a power line on the way down.

Witnesses say the pilot’s 30 years of experience and quick thinking saved lives in the event.
