A bus accident Sunday morning on Fort Rucker left 12 Marines hospitalized, including one person who suffered life threatening injuries, according to Lt. Col. Fritz Pfeiffer, of the Anti-Terrorism Battalion.

All 23 of the Marines traveling on the charter bus suffered injuries during the accident, which happened around 9 a.m. near Mateson Range on Fort Rucker. All of the Marines were part of E Company, Anti-Terrorism Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Corps Reserve Center in North Alabama.

Four of the soldiers who were critically injured were evacuated by Fort Rucker’s Air Ambulance Detachment “Flatiron,” according to a statement released by the Public Affairs Office of Fort Rucker.

Lisa Eichhorn, a spokesperson for the Fort Rucker Public Affairs Office, said the accident was still under investigation, and no charges had been filed.

Eleven of the Marines were treated and released from area hospitals after the crash, according to a statement released by the Anti-Terrorism Battalion out of Bessemer.

“These are reserve Marines and they were returning home from weekend training,” Pfeiffer said.

Pfeiffer declined to release any of the names of the injured soldiers. He said Army Criminal Investigations Division at Fort Rucker will be investigating the crash.

The crash happened in Coffee County on the military base about three miles from Alabama Highway 27, according to Alabama Highway Patrol Sgt. Scott Brasher.

According to a witness between five to six people were ejected from the bus during the crash. Eight of the people were taken to Flowers Hospital for treatment, including at least three critically injured people. The other passengers injured were taken to hospitals in Enterprise and Elba, Brasher said.

Two investigators with the Alabama Highway Patrol are assisting military personnel in the accident investigation.
