Woman Arrested for $200,000 Theft From Nursing Home Resident

An Apalachicola woman who cared for an elderly man has been arrested for exploitation of an elderly person.

Attorney General Charlie Crist and Franklin County Sheriff Mike Mock said the woman, 78-year-old Pearl I. Westmorland was accused of using a power of attorney to improperly transfer $200,000 of an elderly man’s assets into accounts she controlled.

Westmoreland is facing four felony charges.

The arrest is a result of an investigation by the attorney general’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.

The victim, a nursing home resident who previously lived in a trailer park owned by Westmoreland, had signed a document providing Westmoreland with power of attorney over his personal assets.

She then transferred $200,000 of his assets into her own accounts.
