Dennis' Damage Runs Into the Billions

A preliminary survey shows damage from Hurricane Dennis in the United States could run has high as two and a half billion dollars. One billion in insured losses occurred here in Florida.

In Bay County the biggest loss is the beach, where Panama City Beach is once again suffering from beach erosion. Tourism officials say it is much worse than the loss during Hurricane Ivan ten months ago.

A $30 million beach restoration project will get started again once the contractor can get the dredging equipment back in place and running once again, but tourism leaders say much more sand will be needed.

The estimated economic loss at Panama City Beach from Hurricane Dennis is about $22 million, but the good news is almost all the beach businesses are back in operating after only 24 hours.
