A number of facility requests on the "critical needs" list went before the board today. The proposed projects affect Rutherford High, Mowat Middle, along with Cedar Grove and Callaway Elementaries.

The projected costs for construction during the next two school years would be more than $21 million, but only $8 million of those funds are estimated available from remaining 1/2 cent money.

Board members Pat Sabiston and Jon McFatter wanted to delay approval of the projects until June when the legislature sets their budget, but the remaining board members voted to go ahead with the projects after hearing from principals at those schools.

"It's desperately needed and we will manage one way or the other, but if this board can find a way and this district can find a way to fund these as quickly as possible it would be very beneficial to our students and our community," said Mike Kennedy, Rutherford High School Principal.

"I think if there is any way we can find a way to fund Mowat's gym and Rutherford's gym. I'm sure is the same situation. They're the only two un-air-conditioned gyms in the district, then that's something that needs to happen," said Shirley Baker, Mowat Middle School Principal.

Board members say funding the projects could mean raising the millage rate to two mills. The principals say they're in support of the raise if it means getting better facilities for their students.

Solution. Put the sales tax back to a vote with strict requirements on how the money is spent. The voters turned down the last bill because of the way it was written. Fire the school board for failing to deal with this problem years ago.
