Flight cancellations are causing headaches for people taking flights on Delta Air Lines from Atlanta today because of the company's voluntary re-inspection of wiring on its MD-88 airplanes.
Delta says in a news release this morning that it expects about 275 cancellations through early tomorrow -- affecting about 3 percent of Delta's worldwide flight schedule.
Officials say they expect normal operations to resume by early tomorrow.
Delta began the inspections last night, causing flights to be canceled and unsuspecting passengers to become frustrated.
Delta spokeswoman Chris Kelly says officials are expecting heavy volumes today at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. She says both Delta and the Transportation Security Administration are bringing in extra staff to handle the crowd of travelers.
Kelly said she doesn't yet have estimates on how many passengers are being affected by the flight cancellations. She is urging travelers to check their flight's status on Delta's Web site.
Delta's MD-90 planes were initially part of the re-inspection. Kelly says officials later determined only Delta's 117 MD-88s would be part of the review.
Delta's review comes as American Airlines canceled about 325 flights yesterday so its crews could inspect wire bundles aboard its MD-80 aircraft.
Delta says its planes were inspected earlier this year but the airline is "proactively and voluntarily revalidating" compliance with a directive from the Federal Aviation Administration.
