A Jackson County woman is in a new home today … well sort of.
It's all thanks to a little help from her community.
Elnora Sorey was living in a home that some considered uninhabitable.
She tried to make her living conditions better, but the contractor she hired to do repairs on the home, didn't do his job.
That's when Jackson County Commissioner Willie Spires heard of Sorey's problem.
Commissioners got involved and had the home inspected.
After that inspection, commissioners approved spending a portion of the money they received from a grant called the State Housing Initiative Program, or SHIP to repair the home.
Sorey says the property was in bad shape. "The floor in my bedroom was caving in, I had a hole in the wall, and I needed help," she said.
Jackson County Representative Gary Latham agreed. "The contractor; he did so many things wrong that it took a lot more money to go back and fix it, and particularly, I was worried about the electrical system."
In addition to all the needed repairs, the home was also upgraded to be more energy efficient.
It now has central heat and air, and wood flooring.
