These tough economic times got tougher today for 50 Bay Countians when they lost their jobs.
Sallie Mae, one of the county’s largest employers, confirmed the layoff of 50 workers, effective Friday.
That leaves the Lynn Haven company, which handles student loans, with 876 employees. Sallie Mae spokeswoman said those being laid off are receiving severance pay and assistance with finding new employment.
The company had a smaller cutback in January, and announced it would be looking for ways to cut costs.
Sallie Mae had added more than 200 employees over the past seven years before having to make the cuts.
