State Blocks Insurers From Canceling Dennis Policies

The state is issuing an emergency order to prevent insurance companies from canceling or refusing to renew policies covering buildings or houses damaged by Hurricane Dennis.

Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty issued the order Tuesday.

The order covers policies in Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Bay, Gulf, Franklin, Wakulla, Calhoun, Jackson, Washington and Holmes Counties. They are all in the northwest part of the state.

Preliminary damage estimates from various hurricane models have put expected damages at $1.2 billion to $5.5 billion.
