Last fall, Actor Dennis Quaid’s twins survived an overdose. It became national news. But here in Florida, another child was given ten times what he should have been given and he quietly died. The family is now trying to turn the tragedy into something positive.
By all accounts, Sebastian Ferrero was a happy, healthy 3 year old. His only problem...not growing fast enough. So his parents took him to Shands.
Luisa Ferrero, his mother, says it was supposed to be simple.
“It was supposed to be, you know, a simple 4 hour test”
Halfway into the procedure, Sebastian showed stress. His mother questioned the doctors and the dosage.
Horst Ferrero, the baby’s father said they were told all was Okay.
“But she was reassured the dosage was appropriate”
An emergency room visit and 48 hours later Sebastian was dead. The 3 year old had been given 60 grams instead of 6 grams of a substance used to test growth hormones.
Now the family wants to turn their grief into action.
They have offered to match up to a million dollars toward the construction of a children’s hospital. They are also on a campaign to make sure parents’ voices are heard.
“A child can not say can you check to dose to see if it is correct, so if a parent is asking those question, they must be heard”.
“We don’t want another family to go through we are going through and what Sebastian went through”.
Medical errors kill an estimated 98 thousand people in the U-S every year. Sebastian is the face of one of them.
The family did received 850 thousand dollars from the Hospital. It is using that money as well as some of their own to match private donations. You can learn more about the case on the family web site at http://www.sebastianferrero.org/

This is a wonderful, heartfelt story. However; a new childrens hospital is not what is needed. Having the physicians take the time to stop and listen to us parents, when we have questions. Just because they hold a higher degree, this doesn't mean we as parents are ignorant. We know our children better than anyone else does. Besides, it's our right as a parent to question over and over again. If a physician has a problem with that, then he has no business working with children. Medical mistakes happen. Yes, it's a sad thing. The Dr. should immediately of doubled checked the dosage and owned up to his mistake. But in reality, people are only human. Better people skills and policies and the ability for these Dr's to handle their case loads to where they are not so over booked on apts and procedures, that they actually have time to listen and care.

All medication should be dispensed by a computer controlled machine so "human" error can't happen. Any diviation from what the computer database determines to be normal or actually prescribed for that patient should prevent the machine from dispensing the drug. Each patient should have a bar scan bracelet to ensure they are who the nurse and doctor think they are too. If this system was in use, Sebastian would not have been injected with 10 times that amount of drug needed to be effective. There is a solution and it should have been solved many many years ago.
