Escambia County sheriff's deputies fatally shot a 25-year-old man who repeatedly fired a handgun at them during a standoff.
Jeremy Wayne Baxley held authorities at bay for six hours from his Cantonment mobile home.
The deputies had responded to a domestic disturbance call by Baxley's grandmother. Though Baxley continued to repeatedly fired at deputies throughout the afternoon and evening, officials say his grandmother was able to escape unharmed.
Tear gas was fired into the home just before 8 p.m. Sheriff Ron McNesby says Baxley then appeared at the door wrapped in a blanket and threatened deputies. Officials say at least one SWAT team member fired his weapon at Baxley.
Baxley was pronounced dead at the scene. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.
