For a number of years there has been talk about the need to expand the Panama City Airport or to build a new one. This week Bay County is another step closer to getting that new airport.
St. Joe Company has just finished drafting a 21-page agreement which will officially give 4,000 acres of land to Bay County for a new airport.
The site is still the much talked about location just east of the West Bay area on State Road 388 West. The plans call for an 8,000-foot runway and a four-lane road connecting it to Highway 388.
Supporters are hoping a bigger airport will allow larger planes to land there, which could mean new carriers and cheaper flights. They also hope the larger facility will attract industry that requires airline service or air shipping.
Bay County Airport and Industrial District board members must agree to accept the land.
If they do, and that is expected, then the district can begin working with the Federal Aviation Administration and other local, state and national agency's to finalize the deal.
