The federal government is about to quit doing business with two Bay County environmental companies.
An environmental watchdog group called PEER has notified Big Wheel Recycling and Aztec Environmental that they are being blacklisted.
The ban would extend to several Aztec subsidiaries, including a towing business.
The whole thing stems from a complaint by the U.S. Air Force about dumping at a landfill. Big Wheel and Aztec operate next to the county landfill in the Steelfield area not far from West Bay.
PEER claims the companies have illegally accepted and disposed of asbestos and old tires at the landfill. The group has asked for a grand jury investigation in the way the Florida Department of Environmental Protection has handled the case.
Aztec company officials told NewsChannel Seven late Wednesday they have a strong record of complying with government regulations and are proactively responding to the current government notices, which arrived on September 8.
Big Wheel and Aztec have 30 days to respond.
