Shelter Opens on the West End of the Local Beaches

Laguna Beach Christian Retreat on Front Beach Road has opened its doors to be used as a shelter by Mississippi and Louisiana evacuees.

The retreat, which is not a Red Cross shelter, will house up to 500 people and provide three hot meals daily.

There’s no charge and people can stay several months if need be.

David Haals of the retreat says his staff didn’t have to look far to see there was a desperate need.

“We are actually seeing people stranded on the side of Back Beach Road (US 98) packed up with all their belongings and living out of their vehicles. Many of them couldn’t afford to rent a motel room.”

Laguna Beach Christian Ministries is currently running the shelter with the help of Beach Care Services. It’s located in the 20,300 block of Front Beach Road at Panama City Beach. It’s about three miles west of State Road 79.

You can contact them at 850-234-2502.

The Red Cross, meanwhile, operates shelters in Panama City, Bonifay, Chipley and Defuniak Springs.
