Stiff Jail Terms Handed to Jail Takeover defendants

A local judge gave three former Bay County Jail inmates the maximum penalty allowed for last fall's take-over at the Bay County Jail.

Last week a jury acquitted 29-year-old Kevin Nix, 32-year-old James Norton and 20-year-old Matthew Coffin of the most serious charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault and escape.

But jurors did find them guilty of three counts of false imprisonment, punishable by up to five years in prison for each count.

Tuesday, the judge ordered the sentences to run consecutively and tacked-it-onto the time they are already serving for other convictions. That's an extra 15 years for each.

The trio was responsible for taking over the third floor of the downtown county jail facility last September.

A SWAT team shot two of the suspects and one of the hostages while bringing the situation to an end.
