The Bay County Jail is nearing completion.

Construction began on the new jail next to the existing annex in March of last year and in just over a year it's taking shape.

The goal in building was to have the county in compliance will all federal regulations, and once complete the jail will be.

It' just under 179,000 square feet and will add 688 beds to the 400 that are already on site. Something unique about the jail is that it was designed to hold 130 percent of its capacity, meaning that when the jail population grows so can the jail.

The county wanted to build not only for the present but also for the future.

Bob Majka, Assistant County Manager, said, "Over the next 20 years that'll actually allow us to grow to over 1,400 beds, so that as the community grows and the jail population grows along with that we'll have the space and facilities to handle that growth over the next 20 years."

The expansion has several securities feature including separate booking facilities for male and female inmates.

There is also a new road being built to access the jail annex, something of major importance to the county commission.

Majka said that construction is on time and on budget.

The new jail was definitely a good idea!Bay county really did need a new jail.. I just dont understand why the visitation was changed the way it was?!The jail sits between bay and calhoun and its about a 30 to 45 minute drive for me to get there and instead of it being a 2 hour visit like it use to be,its only 2 visits a week and each visit is only 30 minutes!?With the distance and cost of gas its hard for someone to visit their loved ones like that.I'm just curious why its like that now!?

It doesn't matter how many jails they build if they wont train their staff to watch for inappropriate activites by visitors. I went with a friend to see her boyfriend and I saw some awful disgusting sex acts being performed in the visiting area, thru the glass, the visitor was performing. I told the girl to knock it off there were children in there. She told me to mind my own business, so I left. My friend was scared her boyfriend would get beat up if I told anyone, so I didnt but it was awful. The mother with the kids left as I did. Also people were putting envelopes of who knows what under the door flaps.
