An Estimated 7,000 Hurricane Evacuees Are in Bay County

The Central Panhandle Chapter of the American Red Cross is spending nearly $300,000 a day to help Katrina evacuees.

It's estimated there are at least 2,800 families or close to 7,000 evacuees staying on Panama City Beach, and some say that's a conservative estimate.

Tuesday, Red Cross workers say they helped 280 families at the Senior Center on Middle Beach Road at a cost of more than $22,000.

The Red Cross needs volunteers for family service work during business hours, and it’s also looking for volunteers who can deploy to the damaged areas for 10 days to two weeks.
