We typically don't report bomb threats, but a situation at a local high school brought about this evening's exception to that rule.
School officials and local law enforcement are investigating a bomb threat found scribbled on a mirror in a girl's bathroom at Arnold High School.
School officials sent notes home to parents, and that has caused some widespread concern.
Principal Dr. John Haley said, "We're not going to leave any stone unturned and any child unprotected, I assure you of that."
A bomb threat scribbled on a mirror in one of the girl's rest rooms at Arnold High School has Panama City Beach Police and Bay County sheriffs conducting a full on investigation.
"There will be a bomb on campus on Friday. Rest in peace and that was it," Principal Haley said, describing the words written on the bathroom mirror.
Authorities discovered the threat Monday.
Principal Haley sent out an iris notice to parents the very next day.
While Principal Haley doesn't believe the bomb will really occur on Friday, he says the unknown author of the note is getting exactly what they wanted: a rush of sensationalism. "That will just empty the schools out and nobody wants to send their kids on Friday," he continued.
Student Kaley Vanberger says she wasn't going to be in-school Friday because of a field trip, but she also says lots of her friends are now planning to skip.
"Most of them are going to skip school because they talked to their parents and most of them are scared and just don't want to go and a lot of people aren't," Vanberger said.
Kaley's mom Janet agrees. "If she were to come to school on Friday, if she didn't have a field trip, we would not send her."
However, Principal Haley says every safety precaution is being taken.
And, he's not cutting students any slack about missing Friday. “Keeping their kids home now, unless otherwise directed, are unexcused absences," he concluded.
Principal Haley is assuring parents their students will be safe.
The school is offering a $100 dollar reward for information leading to the person responsible for the threat.
Principal Haley says that person will receive the harshest penalties allowed by law and school rules.
