Race officials say a Georgia man died after he was pulled from the water during the swimming portion of a Florida Panhandle triathlon.

The News Herald reports that 38-year-old Patrick Kane of Roswell, Georgia, died at a hospital shortly after he was pulled from the Gulf of Mexico during the Gulf Coast Triathlon Saturday.

Race Director Shelley Bramblett called Kane's death a "tragic incident."

The newspaper reports that Kane flipped over during the 1.2-mile swimming leg of the competition and was then pulled from the water.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Lieutenant Stan Kirkland says officials from his agency were called to the scene at about 8 a.m. today to help in the rescue effort.

An autopsy hasn't been scheduled yet.
