An Altha man is in jail accused of neglecting a number of animals, including horses. Jackson County sheriff's investigators arrested Tom James at the property located off hasty pond road.
He's accused of neglecting 28 horses. Neighbors originally called authorities reporting that the horses were starving. One of the animals reportedly died. Authorities say none of them had been vaccinated.
Bay County Animal Rescue workers and an non-profit group teamed up to save the remaining horses.
They'd been feeding the horse and providing medical attention for about two weeks, but began removing them from the property yesterday.
Melanie Higdon of Florida Horse Rescue explained what happens next.
"What you see today is a large improvement in they're condition since 10 days ago when they were wormed. We feel really fortunate that they've come back so fast, some of them haven't and they are at my farm waiting to go to foster homes until the courts can decide what will happen to them."
At some point the animals will need new homes. If you would like more information you can contact Melanie Higdon at FloridaHorseRescue.com
