Local Man Recognized for Bravery

An apartment complex maintenance man was honored Tuesday by the Panama City Fire Department for his heroics during an apartment fire back in July.

Steve McElreath received the Heroism and Bravery award for rushing into the Royal Arms Garden Apartment complex after it had caught on fire.

McElreath helped families evacuate, turned off all the gas and got people to move their cars away from the multi-unit building which was on fire.

Panama City firefighters say his heroics helped stop the fire from spreading and may have saved lives. He says he was just doing his job and he was able to react, thanks to training he had received in the U.S. Navy.

Investigators say the fire at the complex on Balboa Ave. was caused by an electrical short in a lamp cord.
