Veterinarian staff at Freeport Pet Clinic have coined the name “Amazing Grace” for a dog that was rescued Sunday evening.
Grace was found with most of the skin on her back removed and the pads of her paws severely burned. The medical staff needs your help to offset the cost of Gracie's expensive treatments.
Freeport Pet Clinic received Grace earlier this week after she was found Sunday night wandering on Fairground Road in Escambia County.
Alaqua Animal Refuge works closely with Freeport Pet Clinic and decided Dr. Gerrie Barr would be the perfect person to help.
Dr. Gerrie Barr, a veterinarian, said, "I see the pain that I know Gracie went though when this thing occurred. It really takes some emotions out of you. You think how could someone do something like this and still walk the streets and live among us."
Barr is still unsure what caused Gracie's horrific wounds, but he thinks it was either a chemical or thermal burn. And to make matters worse, Grace has a heart worm problem.
Twice a day Gracie is brought into an examine room where her wounds are treated extensively. Authorities say Grace's injuries would mean felony charges. At this time they have no leads.
Despite everything Gracie has been though, employees at the clinic say she has a wonderful personality.
Rachel Montgomery, a clinic employee, said, "She's in the best of spirits, just a sweet dog. You can never believe that someone did something like that to her and she still be so people friendly."
Dr. Barr says Grace will need treatments at the clinic for another three months, but the staff are actively seeking someone who will love Grace.
"My hope is that she finds a great home and just receives a lot of love. To me, she's a story of hope."
If you'd like to donate to help pay for Grace's treatments you're asked to contact the Freeport Pet Clinic, and if you have any information about the abuse you're asked to contact your local authorities.
