LOCAL SEMINOLE AND GATOR FANS WERE ABLE TO PUT THEIR DIFFERENCES ASIDE FOR THE NIGHT, WELL AT LEAST HIDE THEIR FEELINGS FOR A FEW HOURS.
THEY ALL CAME TO HEAR ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS GATORS OF ALL TIME... DANNY WUERFFEL.
MORE THAN 11-HUNDRED PEOPLE PACKED A LOCAL CHURCH THURSDAY NIGHT TO HEAR WUERFFEL TALK ABOUT LIFE, FOOTBALL, AND REBUILDING FOLLOWING HURRICANE KATRINA.
NINE YEARS AGO DANNY WUREFFEL LEAD THE FLORIDA GATORS TO THEIR FIRST, AND ONLY NATIONAL TITLE.
AFTER A PRODUCTIVE PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL CAREER, DANNY FOLLOWED HIS LIFE-LONG CALLING JOINING THE DESIRE STREET MINISTRIES IN NEW ORLEANS.
MANY PEOPLE HERE IN THE PANHANDLE KNEW OF DANNY WUERFFEL BEFORE HE EVER WON THE HEISMEN TROPHY AND LEAD THE FLORIDA GATORS TO A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.
WUERFFEL GREW UP HERE IN OKALOOSA COUNTY, PLAYING FOOTBALL FOR FORT WALTON BEACH HIGH SCHOOL.
AND AFTER YEARS AWAY FROM THE PANHANDLE WUERFFEL IS ONCE AGAIN CALLING IT HOME.
HE CAME BACK FOLLOWING HURRICANE KATRINA, WHICH DESTROYED HIS HOME, AND HIS DESIRE STREET MINISTRIES IN NEW ORLEANS.
SO NOW WUERFFEL, THE FACE OF DESIRE STREET, IS TRYING TO RAISE MONEY TO HELP DESIRE STREET GET BACK ON ITS FEET.
"It just goes to show you that we ran the ad a couple of times, you know advertise it, and people of Bay County want to hear Danny and his message," said Steve Wilson of the Pointman Ministry.
OVER 11-HUNDRED PEOPLE WANTED TO HEAR DANNY'S MESSAGE THURSDAY NIGHT AT THE POINTMAN MEN'S MINISTRY IN PANAMA CITY.
"Well I think all the experinces we have we can share with others and that's the platform I've been given and things i've experienced both on the football field and through this storm, said Wuerffel."
WURFFEL AND THE DESIRE STREET MINISTRY HAVE RE-LOCATED FROM NEW ORLEANS TO OKALOOSA COUNTY.
WUERFFEL HOPES THIS IS JUST A TEMPORARY MOVE AND THAT HE CAN GATHER ENOUGH MONEY TO TAKE THE MINISTRY BACK HOME.
IN THE MEANTIME WUERFFEL STILL ENJOYS TALKING ABOUT FOOTBALL WITH THE PEOPLE WHO WATCHED HIM BECOME A GREAT FOOTBALL PLAYER.
"Well there's a lot of great gators and lot of great football fans all around and so it's great to be here and so hopefully we'll have a lot of fun, said Wuerffel."
