Sunny Hills residents awoke to tragic news Thursday morning. A well-known couple was killed in a car wreck at the entrance to the Washington County community.

Eighty-six-year-old Luther Bellamy and his 82-year-old wife Gladys were Sunny Hills pioneers. The Bellamy's were hit by a dump truck at the intersection of Sunny Hills Blvd and Highway 77.

Friends say the couple was active in the community and will be deeply missed. Luther and Gladys were married for more than 60 years and Sunny Hills was their home for the last 30 years. They were devoted to the community, and to each other.

Luther Bellamy was the second fire chief in the history of Sunny Hills. When the fire department was short on funding Bellamy did what he had to to make ends meet.

State troopers say Luther Bellamy pulled his vehicle off of Sunny Hills Boulevard, right out in front of a dump truck traveling north on Highway 77. He died at the scene.

Gladys Bellamy died a short time later at Northwest Florida Community Hospital in Chipley.
