City commissioners voted unanimously to hire David Barnes as the permanent police chief for the city.
Barnes took over as acting chief 16 months ago when former chief Sam Slay stepped down.
After Monday night’s vote, Barnes says he's pleased Springfield commissioners had the confidence in him to name him the permanent chief.
He says he's looking forward to building new and better relationships with the citizens, the commissioners and the county's other agencies, to get the job done and make Springfield a safer place.
Barnes also says he plans to keep the chief's job until he retires, which he hopes will be many years from now.
