He turns 18 on Saturday but he won't be able to celebrate with family and friends because he'll be behind bars. Tyler Chance Wert of Santa Rosa Beach was sentenced in Bay County Circuit Court for two counts of D-U-I manslaughter.
Back on May 10, the teenager was driving an S-U-V on Back Beach Road near Toledo Place in Laguna Beach when he crossed the grass median and hit an on-coming car head on.
The driver of the other car, 78-year-old Ray Tipton from Homewood, Alabama, and 76-year-old Emma-Lene Young from Panama City Beach were both killed.
Wert was wearing his seatbelt, Tipton and Young were not.
Wert was sentenced to 12 years in prison, followed by 18 years probation. He also must make restitution and is ordered to speak to groups, at least four times a year, about the consequences of drinking and driving.
