A Marine at Eglin Air Force Base has been honored with the country's third-highest medal for valor.
Staff Sergeant Jason Navarrette is an instructor at the Naval Explosive Ordinance Disposal School at the base. He has received the Silver Star.
The husband and father of two already has the Purple Heart for a gunshot wound he suffered to his left arm.
Navarrette was attached to a Marine Expeditionary Force unit as a technician when his team was ambushed in Iraq. While helping stranded Marines, he was wounded. He says it hurt right away but he didn't want to let anyone down and kept going.
Several insurgents were killed or wounded in the exchange of small arms fire.
This is the 24th Silver Star awarded since the start of the War on Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq.
