New Year's Baby

Only two hours in to 2006 and Bay County had its first baby of the new year.

Early Sunday morning Ashley Pittman gave birth to a healthy, beautiful baby girl, who is the first baby of the year here in Bay County. She was born at Gulf Coast Medical Center.

After a long drive, but a relatively quick labor, first time mom Ashley Pittman gave birth to a 7 pound 9 ounce baby girl right after two a.m. New Year’s morning.

Mom-to-be didn't expect to give birth until after the New Year. She was scheduled to be induced on the 6th. But the couples new year's plans took a turn toward the hospital when Ashley felt her first sign of labor.

Elizabeth Marie Pittman was delivered shortly after 2 am Sunday. The family says it’s glad to have made it to the hospital in time and safely considering their hour and a half drive from Washington County through last night's dense fog.

New mom, Ashley Johnson Pittman, the extremely heavy fog worried her. "We're driving and we're thinking we're not gonna make it. It's foggy out and you can barely see the road."

Gulf Coast’s medical staff presented new mom and baby with a gift basket in honor of being the first baby of the new year.

By the way, last year was a record setting year for Gulf Coast Medical Center. The hospital delivered 2,273 babies in 2005.
