Florida's House Speaker says lawmakers need to take a hard look at whether the state's juvenile boot camps are working.
Rep. Allan Bense's comments come in the wake of the recent death of a 14-year-old boy just hours after beginning a boot camp program in Bay County.
"I've asked the Criminal Justice Committee, the Criminal Justice Appropriations Committee to take a look at these boot camp programs. What's the recidivism rate, are they successful in general, have we had other problems like what occurred in my home town with the boot camp. It's probably a good time to evaluate the effectiveness of boot camps."
Martin Lee Anderson's family alleges he was abused at the boot camp in Panama City on East 11th Street.
The Panama City Juvenile Boot Camp is one of six operated in Florida.
