LAUREL HILL, Fla. (AP) -- A soldier from the Florida Panhandle died when his unit was attacked by rocket propelled grenades in Afghanistan.
The U.S. Department of Defense says 38 year old Sgt. First Class William K. Lacey of Laurel Hill died Saturday in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.
Lacey was assigned to 201st Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigrade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division in Fort Knox, Kentucky.
His death marks the first combat loss of 2014 for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.
He joined the military in 2003.
This was Lacey's fifth deployment, three to Iraq and two to Afghanistan.
Lacey was born at Eglin Air Force Base and raised in Niceville.
