New Program Gives Bonuses to Substitute Teachers

PANAMA CITY - Bay District Schools board members are also exploring ways to attract the best substitute teachers available.

They've decided to give bonuses to substitutes who work more than 100 hours in a 9 week period. The bonus amount would be $150.

Subs who work more than 150 hours in a 9 week period will receive an extra $250.

"Finding high quality subs is something that we've decided we're going to put a lot of emphasis and focus on. How we get there, we believe financially is the way we approach it. So this is the beginning of that plan," said Superintendent Bill Husfelt.

Currently substitutes are paid on an hourly rate based on their own education level. If the program is successful, Husfelt says it's possible the district would increase the substitute bonus amounts in the future.
