The pile of trash lining a Marianna street for almost two months may soon be cleaned up.
Residents say the garbage showed up back in May on Kenny Street on the south side of Marianna. The neighbors claim they've repeatedly asked city officials to clean up the mess, but were ignored because the neighborhood is predominantly black.
Marianna City Manager Jim Dean says he didn't hear about the problem until this past Friday. He also points out the garbage is on private property, so it's the land owners responsibility to clean up.
"The code enforcement officer will go over and make sure that a violation is taking place, once that's verified the code enforcement officer will contact the property owner and they will have 14 days to clean it up if they don't clean it up, then city will clean it up."
Dean says the city is contacting Arthur Charles, an upstate New York resident who owns the vacant lot. They say if Charles won't remove the debris, the city could handle it, then send Charles the bill.
