2007 Bay High graduate Tony Poor spent his freshman year of college studying computer science at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. His sophomore year he'll do so with one of the most prestigious scholarships a student can receive, the Cambridge International Fellowship Scholarship.

"It was a great surprise. I mean any financial help I can get is awesome and it was really a great honor. It just totally came out of the blue," said Tony Poor, Scholarship Recipient.

Tony was part of Bay High's Advanced International Certificate Education Program. Through AICE, he took a number of exams administered by Cambridge University.

"I'm glad the testing process is over, but now I'm on to harder tests, but it is really a great honor and it's a real surprise to me," said Poor.

While at Bay High, Tony was a National Merit finalist and an AP scholar with a 4.41 grade point average. But despite his successes, Tony’s teachers say he remains humble and focused.

Bay High AICE Coordinator Kris Palfrey originally nominated Tony for the scholarship.

"I screamed and I cried because it was such a thrill for such a wonderful young person to get this scholarship, and I think that that's the most important thing is that there's probably nobody more deserving of accolades that I know of than Tony," said Palfrey.

Only two other students globally received the scholarship alongside Tony. One was from Pakistan and one from Egypt. Tony will be acknowledged during the upcoming school board meeting this Wednesday, July 9.
