Bay County School Board members are still waiting to see what the Legislature will do before passing a school calendar for the 2006-2007 school year.
Right now they've tentatively passed a calendar with the first day of the new school year set for August 2. That's the earliest Bay County students have ever started school.
The beginning of the school year is a hot topic in Tallahassee.
Florida legislators are considering a bill that would not allow districts to start classes until seven days before Labor Day at the earliest.
They say a later start date would save money, improve student safety and allow students more time for summer jobs and family vacations.
Some school districts have agreed on an alternate calendar if the state does change the law. Bay County School Board members have not released an alternative calendar.
