If you have an emergency in DeFuniak Springs the police department might get there quicker thanks to a new 911 system installed today. The EOC and police department received the equipment through a state grant, and the system's features are state of the art.

When DeFuniak Springs police received a used 9-1-1 system in April 2007, they were glad to get it.

Capt. Mark Week with DeFuniak Springs PD said, "The equipment that we got was from Okaloosa County. It was used old equipment that was replaced by new equipment."

Although it's done a good job, it's time to replace this older system. The DeFuniak Springs Police Department it getting a brand new 9-1-1 unit. The state Emergency Operations Center gave DeFuniak Springs a grant for the new equipment.

All the dispatchers have to do is click on this map, zoom in, and you can see the exact address of the location they need to respond to.

Alicia McMillian works closely with DeFuniak Springs police officers, dispatching them on calls.

Alicia McMillian, Communications Officer, said, "We're really excited about the new map and the fact that it pinpoints addresses, so that way we're able to essentially get the officer there in a shorter amount of time."

The new map isn't the only special feature. The system can also track calls quicker and allow access to call history with just a click of a button.

Currently, employees are training on the equipment which goes online next Monday.

"We're excited about it. It's state of the art equipment, state of the art technology, so we'll be able to do things that we're not capable of doing right now."

The state EOC gave DeFuniak springs a total of $680,000. The police department received a little more than $200,000 to buy the new 9-1-1 system.
