A dollar sure doesn't go as far as it used to. Marianna city commissioners are looking at a proposal to increase the current fire protection surcharge.

Residents have paid one dollar for the service for years. Commercial property was $1.50, but Marianna City Manager Jim Dean says they need to increase that fee to pay for fire department improvements.

"The surcharge was implemented back in 1986 and it was to purchase equipment and capital improvements for the city fire department and back in 1986 equipment cost a lot less than it does now."

City commissioners haven't decided on the amount of the increase, but the fire fee may not be the only thing going up.

Commissioners say trash pick up fees aren't covering the cost of the service. The issue will come up at the next city commission meeting.
