Former Cedar Grove Public Works Director Tom Voght is still wondering why he was suddenly fired Tuesday night.
After our cameras left Tuesday night's commission meeting, Town Commissioner Tony Brannen made a motion to fire Voght and it was immediately seconded by Commissioner Janice Beier.
The vote that followed left some of those in attendance in disbelief.
With a possible dissolution ordinance on the horizon, the town of Cedar Grove is one employee short and the list could be growing.
Tom Voght was the Public Works director; that’s until the town commission voted 3-2 Tuesday to oust him from his position.
It’s leaving him without a job and wondering why. He said he was "Very surprised; I've been with the town of Cedar Grove for five years."
The decision left those in attendance shocked and wanting answers.
So, we confronted Brannen on the issue.
He didn't want to appear on camera. He said we should look in public records at Cedar Grove Town Hall. And, that's exactly what we did. After looking through Voght’s personnel file, we didn't find a single complaint.
"I've been a very positive employee; been there for the citizens and the commission. [I am] very shocked," Voght said.
According to Town Clerk Jim Anderson, Brannen met with him around 4 o'clock Tuesday, just before the commission meeting and did not mention anything negative about any employee.
"Gardner, Bier, and Brannen [voted] to fire Mr. Voght for reasons that they really couldn't say and would not disclose," Chris Burnham, a Cedar Grove commissioner said.
Commissioner Brannen told us Voght was fired because he was “negligent, insubordinate, and disrespectful”. Voght is now seeking an attorney.
"I would like to say to each and every citizen of the town of Cedar Grove please get out; go to the commission meetings, see the truth," Voght said.
"We are very upset and very aggravated and just to see this is just one of another of many circumstances of malfeasance that's going on in the town," Tricia Lacount, president of the Citizens Coalition to Preserve Cedar Grove said.
Lacount has spoken to the State Attorney General's Office and she says she was told commissioners Brannen, Bier, and Gardner are in violation of several of Florida’s Sunshine Laws.
The Attorney General’s Office has referred it back to State Attorney Steve Meadows.
