If you live in Southport, you are one step closer to deciding if you want your community to become a city.
The Florida House, on a 118-0 vote, approved a bill allowing Southport voters to decide whether to incorporate their community.
There are about 7,000 people in Southport, and about half that many registered voters.
The bill now goes to the Florida Senate where easy approval is also expected.
Once the bill passes, it will be up to the Bay County commission to schedule a date for the referendum. The bill establishes a city manager form of municipal government if the voters approve incorporation.
Fear of possible annexation by Lynn Haven was one of the factors in proposing incorporation.
