The Walton County beach restoration project was shut down indefinitely Thursday morning.
The halt to the dredging and pumping operation came after a Kemp's Ridley sea turtle was killed early in morning. It's the third killed in that project.
According to the permits the county must monitor the waters around the dredge. Fifteen Keps and 17 loggerheads have been captured close to the dredge and relocated to safer areas.
The project had completed 39 percent of its work when it was shut down. It was working on a seven-mile stretch of the Walton and Destin coastline.
Environmental agencies now have to review what has happened and make changes in the permits before the project can continue, if it is even allowed to continue.
There's no time frame when a restart might be authorized.
