Authorities say a Crime Stoppers tip helped connect a man being held in the Escambia County Jail with the fatal shootings of eight horses and five dogs in the Beulah community.
Twenty-four-year-old Craig Smith of Pensacola is charged with five felony counts of cruelty to animals resulting in a cruel death, and eight felony counts of killing or abusing horses.
He's also charged with one count of firearm use during a felony and two felony counts of armed trespassing.
Authorities say Smith was being held at the jail in Pensacola on charges of firearm possession by a convicted felon in an unrelated case.
The tip prompted investigators to interview him about the April 17 animal shootings on Desmond Davis' 113-acre property.
Reports say Smith claims he was shooting rabbits on the property, but denied approaching the dogs or horses.
Smith's bond has been increased from $50,000 to $500,000.
