The law enforcement officers that make up the anti-gang task force are using awareness and education to get their message across, and they're looking to the schools for help.

During Wednesday's school board meeting state attorney Steve Meadows and several law enforcement officers conveyed the urgency and importance of the situation to the school board.

Meadows asked board members to consider mandatory gang awareness training for teachers and staff. He also asked the board to consider tougher policies to deal with students arrested for violence or gang activity.

"Gangs are not easy to recognize if you're not trained and experienced with gang members, symbols, and doctrine, and that's something I hope we can correct beginning here today."

School board members say there is some training already scheduled for staff, but there is likely going to be more to come.
