According to his family, 38-year-old Bruce Bates and Jennifer Highers had been dating off and on for about one year. They say Highers was drinking Saturday night, and Bates tried to stop her from driving.

Witnesses say the couple quarreled, Highers became enraged, and then ran over Bates. He died almost instantly. When Walton County Sheriff's deputies arrived, Bates' body was still lying in the driveway.

Highers was arrested for driving under the influence, but investigators have not yet charged her with bates death. They're waiting for autopsy results.

Bates' family hopes the investigation moves quickly, to spare any further pain. For the time being, Highers is being held without bond in the Walton County Jail.

Bates leaves behind three sons. The autopsy is being performed Monday, so results should be back within the next day or so.
