Beach Restoration Project Stopped Again

The Walton County and Destin beach nourishment project has been shut down once again after a fourth sea turtle was killed in the sand dredging and pumping operation.

The project was stopped by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers after a Logger Head turtle got caught in the dredge early Sunday morning.

The project was stopped near Pompano Joe's restaurant in Walton County. This comes right after the project was stopped after the last killing of a Kemp's Ridley sea turtle that almost stopped the project until October 1.

Kriss Titus is the Executive Director of the Walton County TDC, sponsors of the effort to place sand on the beach.

"We move on with our challenges and we're trying to get a job done and we have all the confidence in the world that we will get to the end of this project no matter what," he said.

According to Walton County tourism leaders, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers is looking at the dredge to see if there are mechanical malfunctions that caused the latest turtle death.

Still, there has been no word when or if the project can restart.
