With election day about a month and a half away, local political candidates are moving into the home-stretch of the campaign. Today is the latest deadline for the candidates to file their most recent financial contributions. Some of today's early filers are also the ones with the most money in their war chest.

Superintendent
Bill Husfelt $70,124
James McCalister $34,905
Steve George $4,585

Leading the money race for Bay County School Superintendent, Bill Husfelt is reporting just over $70,000. Current Superintendent James McCalister is next in line. Steve George is trailing both men with a little more than $4,000.

Bay Co. Commission District 1
Mike Nelson $99,900
Sharon Sheffield $7,988
William Fisher $4,007

In the District 1 county commission race, incumbent Mike Nelson is closing in on the $100,000 mark. He's holding a significant lead in contributions over both Sharon Sheffield and Bill Fisher.

Bay Co. Commission District 5
Mike Thomas $129,225
Diane Brown  $2,200

A situation in similar in the District 5 race, with incumbent Mike Thomas heavily leading challenger Diane Brown. Noticeably conspicuous by his absence in the commission races, is businessman Charlie Hilton. During the primary campaign Hilton contributed heavily through his businesses and family members for both Nelson and Thomas' opponents. He blamed both commissioners in part, for firing the tourist development council board last year. But Hilton is apparently sitting out this general election.

State Attorney
Glenn Hess  $161,211
Steve Meadows  $ Not Available

The most controversial of the local races and the biggest money battle, is the state attorney's campaign. Glenn Hess is reporting a total of $161,211. As of 5 p.m. Friday, Steve Meadows hadn't filed his latest reports.
But Hess's latest number still puts him a little behind Meadows who in the last report filed $195,119. Meadows has until 11:00 p.m. to file his latest information.
Hess may still be trailing in contributions, but he did pick-up an important endorsement Friday from Florida's Police Benevolent Association.
Candidates have three more financial filing deadlines between now and the November 4 general election.
