The Panama City Beach Council adopted a new ordinance that finally defines what a lifeguard is.

The council approved Ordinance 1132, which calls for a dedicated lifeguard, not a bench vendor.

If they get lifeguards roaming the beaches, they can't sell anything, nor do any other job, just life guard.

The ordinance also calls for beach businesses to place additional signs explaining the flag system at their businesses.

It’s another step to getting lifeguards, but they still have a long way to go.

Ken Nelson, with the Panama City Beach Council said, "It just defines what a designated lifeguard is. So, if we do have lifeguards some time in the future, it will give a definition of the equipment and training that is needed. It's also requiring that the beach vendors and beach motels have additional signage on the beach explaining the flag system."

The council will hold a workshop on October 9th at 10 at the council meeting room.

In that meeting, they will discuss with the TDC, businesses and the public ways to try and fund lifeguards.
