It's a fight that's been going on for more than a year and a half. Should Cedar Grove stay or should it go?

On September 30th, it's a simple “yes” or “no” vote, but what would actually happen if the town dissolved?

The town would become part of unincorporated Bay County. The major disadvantage to dissolving is the neighborhood could lose up to $65 million in improvements in Cedar Grove paid for with the CRA money.

However, on the other hand one advantage to dissolving is having to pay slightly less on your phone or cable bill.

The reason, the 1.82 percent communications tax charged by the county was set by the state. Cedar Grove's communications taxes are 4.92 percent. Should the town dissolve, residents would pay the lower county rate of 1.82 percent.

Another issue is the fee for fire services.

The town contracts fire services through the county in the amount of a quarter of a mill.

That amount would remain the same. Water and sewer rates would change. Cedar Grove residents currently pay a base rate of $12 which includes the first 1,000 gallons.

If the town dissolves, residents would pay a unincorporated county base rate of $8.40 for the first 1,000 gallons.

"Bay County remains solidly behind the citizens of Cedar Grove. We support whatever they choose to do on Tuesday however the vote goes," Valerie Lovett, Bay County's public information officer said.

If the town does decide to dissolve, it isn't the end. A dissolution plan must be put into place and that could take up to 90 days to complete, and the result of Tuesday vote is almost certain to face a court challenge.
