Bay Town Trolley offers free rides to passengers on June 8, 2006.
The Bay Town Trolley says it will offer free rides on Thursday, June 8, 2006 in an effort to support the national “Dump the Pump” initiative. This day is dedicated to raise awareness that public transit is the most effective way to beat high gas prices.
Bay Town Trolley is joining transit agencies from coast to coast encouraging the public to park their cars and ride transit instead.
National “Dump the Pump” day is sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), a non-profit organization of more than 1,600 member organizations, including almost 400 public transit agencies.
“We are proud to be a part of this national initiative,” said Beth Coulliette. “We recognize and understand the important role that public transit plays in our community and we strive to help everyone experience that.”
After housing, transportation is the second highest cost for American families, outweighing both food and health care costs. Since January 2003, gas prices have increased by 100 percent.
“People use public transit more frequently when the cost of gas rises,” said APTA President, William Millar. “National Dump the Pump Day on June 8 will highlight that by using public transit, people can beat high gas prices, help reduce traffic congestion and assist our country in beating our oil addiction.”
