Police are still unsure what motivated a man to take his own life near the Dothan Police Department early Sunday.
Police responded to a report of a man with a firearm near Adams Street and Saint Andrews Street just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday when they encountered 40-year-old Michael G. Whitaker.
Whitaker reportedly had a pistol and a knife in his hand as police approached.
Houston County Deputy Coroner Ben Earnest said there was no altercation and no words were exchanged. He said Whitaker held the gun to his head and fired.
He was pronounced dead at about 2:30 a.m. at Southeast Alabama Medical Center.
