A survey is providing further proof that the Panhandle is no longer a bastion of affordable living in Florida.
The Walton County Chamber of Commerce and Walton County distributed the survey to over 2,000 workers in the resort areas of Destin and south Walton County. They were asked about their need for affordable housing.
The survey found that many workers have long commutes to work because they can't afford to live near their jobs.
Home prices in south Walton and the Destin area range from $300,000 to $1 million. Local officials say many workers spend half of their annual income on housing.
The survey will be used to support a request offering developers incentives including expedited permitting in exchange for providing workforce housing.
