Highway 79 in Vernon
The next phase of the Highway 79 four-laning project is making its way into Washington County. The widening project will reduce traffic congestion caused by tourists heading to and from the beach. And, it will provide another importation hurricane evacuation route. However, the project has claimed a number of businesses in Vernon, and that has some residents upset.

Nub City is doing it again! Like hands and feet no longer needed, trade downtown for cash. Vernon will never be anything but a blur in a rear view mirror.

I lived in Vernon for years. This new highway couldn't happen at a better time. There is absolutely nothing (except for KC's Pizza), that is remotely worth saving in Vernon. Nothing is going to happen to the "city" because there was never a city to begin with. You cannot throw a bunch of dilapidated buildings together and call that a city. At least with the road widening, it will actually bring people in who might be able to notice Vernon and CHANGE, and IMPROVE it for the better. This is actually what the "locals" don't want; outsiders coming in and changing things around. Vernon needs this highway in order to bring change, new blood, and fresher ideas for its future, or it's gonna die on the muscadine vine.
